EHHOP’s Advocacy Team consists of members of the clinic leadership who work together to ensure that all clinic work is grounded in health equity and health justice. Our job is to advocate for our patients and all members of the East Harlem community.

We acknowledge, and embrace, that advocacy takes many forms. We strive to:

Be responsive to patient needs

  • A successful clinic is one that is always responsive to its patients’ needs in real-time. To do this, we have formed a Patient Advisory Group that meets regularly to provide patients with the space to provide feedback, and drive forward real change.

Disseminate our work widely to the community

  • Truly impactful advocacy prioritizes sharing our work widely, with intentional reach outside of the academic community. This includes sharing our work with: (1) local policymakers, with the goal of translating findings into concrete structural improvements; and (2) East Harlem community members and community-based organizations, with the goal of returning knowledge to the community.

Think broadly about EHHOP’s role in the Mount Sinai Health System

  • We believe that all patients, regardless of insurance status or documentation status, should have equal access to healthcare, and we advocate for systemic changes that are in line with these beliefs.

We believe that collaboration, listening, and amplifying voices are central to our advocacy efforts. For patients interested in sitting on our Patient Advisory Group, please email ehhop.clinic@icahn.mssm.edu, or by phone at 877-372-4161. For community organizations or other Student-Run Free Clinics interested in collaborating with us on advocacy work, ehhop.clinic@icahn.mssm.edu or by phone at 877-372-4161.

Central to EHHOP’s role as advocates is engaging in the East Harlem community to collaborate and elevate the impact of meaningful organizations and resources. Listed below are a number of organizations that provide incredible impact in East Harlem and NYC more broadly:
